Contents and Approach
The focus of the three-year project is the analysis, evaluation, and optimization of the energy efficiency and functionality of backup-capable PV storage systems in the 10 kW to 30 kW market segment. To this end, a new methodology will initially be developed that can be used to evaluate the backup power capability of PV storage systems based on laboratory tests. Subsequently, the performance of several PV storage systems in backup power operation will be compared for the first time in laboratory measurements at KIT under identical test conditions. The results will then be published as part of the product comparison (power storage inspection) already established by HTW Berlin. One goal is to improve the security of supply to residential buildings during power outages through appropriate innovations.
Another focus is on improving the energy efficiency of hybrid inverters in the 10 kW to 30 kW power class. The more powerful the inverter, the lower the conversion efficiency generally is at a load of just a few hundred watts. This presents new challenges for the efficient use of high-performance hybrid inverters during nighttime battery discharge. Using measurement data and simulation-based analyses, recommendations for optimizing the energy efficiency of such PV storage systems are being developed. In addition, the power storage inspection will be expanded to include efficiency assessments for single-family homes with heat pumps and electric vehicles. This should ultimately initiate product improvements that will contribute to further increasing the energy efficiency of PV storage systems in the long term.
