Objectives and Results

The goal of the OptiFeLio project is to optimize cost-intensive production processes. The three criteria of quality, safety and cost are in conflict with each other in the planned research topics around the housing production of lithium-ion cells and must be reconciled. The project of the 2nd funding phase of the Excellence Cluster Electromobility South-West aims at both the prismatic and the pouch cell.

Contents and Approach

The greatest challenge in electromobility is the development of high-quality and at the same time safe energy storage systems in the form of lithium-ion batteries at an acceptable price. In order to meet this demand, a drastic improvement in the production technology used is necessary. Above all, it is necessary to reduce the reject rates in cell assembly and at the same time increase plant productivity. On the one hand, this goal is to be achieved through the further development of existing manufacturing processes, such as the thermoforming of aluminium composite foil to form half-shells of pouch cells. On the other hand, the aim is to simplify manufacturing processes through innovative product designs while simultaneously integrating additional functions at the cell level. The planned innovations will help to strengthen confidence in lithium-ion technology and establish Germany as the leading supplier of electromobility.
